Study Title: AI Task Delegation

Purpose of research study:
Humans and machines offer complementary abilities. Some tasks are suitable for automation (machine control), some should arguably not be automated (human control), and some are best addressed by a mix of the two. The study is intended to gather data on how people think about different tasks and how they might feel about delegating control of those tasks to an artificial intelligence agent (as opposed to doing the task themselves or entrusting it to a human agent). We aim to explore how to best approach automation in a way that puts people first, by identifying which tasks should be automated, which shouldn’t, and why.

Task Description:
This task consists of a short survey on a single randomly-selected task. You will be asked to provide some demographic information, then asked to evaluate your thoughts on the given task by stating the extent to which you agree with 11 statements. Finally, you will be asked to decide how much control of the task you would delegate to a computer/artificial intelligence agent (versus keeping control or delegating to a human agent). The survey is expected to take 5 minutes.

Compensation:
You will receive 80 cents for a completed survey response, which is expected to take approximately 5 minutes. At this time, you may only complete one HIT of this type.

Benefits:
There is little direct benefit to participating in this study except that you may learn new tasks that AI could be doing.

Risks:
There is little risk in participating in this study. You may see some tasks that you do not know that AI could be doing.

Voluntary participation:
You may stop participating at any time without penalty by closing your browser window.

Data Management and Confidentiality:
The only identifying information kept about you will be your unique worker ID serial number for the purposes of compensation. Survey responses and worker IDs will be collected on Amazon cloud servers. Data will then be anonymized by removing the worker IDs and stored on secure CU-Boulder servers for analysis by the research team. The anonymized data may be shared with other researchers upon publication of the research.

Note: You may only complete ONE HIT. Please do not queue hits or you will slow down study completion and delay payment.

We are conducting an academic survey about people’s attitudes towards “delegating” different kinds of tasks to an AI (artificial intelligence) versus to a person. You will:

  • Provide basic demographic information
  • Offer your opinion on properties of a task (e.g., mowing a lawn) in the form of agree/disagree statements
  • Choose the best way to divide control of the task between an AI and a person

We expect the survey to take approximately 5-10 minutes, and you will be compensated $0.80 upon submission (Expect approval within 1-2 days; Please note, your submission may not be approved if the attention questions are not answered correctly).

Demographics (Click to expand)
The following questions will help us to understand the study population and representativeness.
1. What best describes your gender?
2. What is your age?
3. How would you rate your level of computer proficiency?
4. What is the highest degree or level of school you have completed? (If currently enrolled, highest degree received)

The following questions are the primary focus of this study.

Important: We will display a task. When answering the following questions, please carefully consider the task and your beliefs about an AI (artificial intelligence) agent performing the task, versus a qualified human person performing the task.

(What is an AI agent? You can think of it as a computer, machine, robot, or some other form of automation.)

Here is the task:
(you should see a random task here)

5. For each of the following statements, please indicate the extent to which you agree or disagree for the above task:

6. If you were to ask someone to complete the given (above) task, what level of AI/machine assistance would you prefer?
Validation error: Please make sure all questions are answered.
